Not For Profit
Spina Bifida Association of New Jersey's Tri-State Region
Over 250,000 Americans are in the Spina Bifida Community. An estimated 70,000 people in the United States are currently living with spina bifida, the most common permanently disabling birth defect. Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect that happens in the first month of pregnancy when the spinal column doesn't close completely. There are 60 million women at risk of having a baby born with Spina Bifida. Everyday, an average of 8 babies are affected by Spina Bifida or a similar birth defect of the brain and spine. Each year, about 3,000 pregnancies are affected by these birth defects.
The Challenges of Spina Bifida
The effects of Spina Bifida are different for every person. Up to 90 percent of children with the worst form of Spina Bifida have hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain) and must have surgery to insert a "shunt" that helps drain the fluid-the shunt stays in place for the lifetime of the person. Other conditions include full or partial paralysis, bladder and bowel control difficulties, learning disabilities, depression, latex allergy and social and sexual issues.
Thanks to new medical treatments and technology, most people born with Spina Bifida can expect to live a normal life. People with Spina Bifida have many special challenges because of their birth defect, but their condition does not define who they are. People with Spina Bifida have careers, get married and have children just like people who don't have Spina Bifida.

HUNTERDON HELPLINE
Teachers, counselors, a nurse, the prosecutor, and a judge started Hunterdon Helpline in 1969 as a Teen Hotline designed to give students someone to talk to anonymously. Helpline began as a part-time, volunteer organization that has grown to be a 24-hour a day, 7-day a week, 365-day a year professional compassionate listening service. Hunterdon Help lines calls are as varied as the individuals who make the call. A call can be as simple as a person trying to find out where to get a passport or as complex as a three way call with distraught parents concerned with their teenaged son.
No two days are the same at Helpline and we have a terrific group of highly trained Community Resource Specialists who are ready to handle any situation that comes their way. If a situation or question comes up that is a bit more challenging the listener will ask if the caller can call back or accept a return call in order to give the Community Resource Specialist time to investigate the possible solution.

Habitat For Hunanity
Building homes, Building lives
Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity is committed to helping hardworking, low-income families in Somerset & Hunterdon counties build better lives by building their own decent, affordable homes.
Many hard working families in Hunterdon & Somerset counties can't afford a decent place to live. Rental rates here are the 4th highest in the country. Many hardworking families live in overcrowded or rundown places because they can't afford anything better. Others pay up to half their income for rent, leaving too little for food, clothing, and healthcare.
Habitat offers families a hand up, not a hand out. Every partner family devotes at least 250 hours of "sweat equity" to help build their home or a neighbor's home. Families then buy their home with a 0% mortgage provided by Raritan Valley HFH. All funds come from the local community and homes are hand-built by Habitat volunteers, working side by side with our partner families.
The Habitat Program Works! In June 2007, we dedicated our 27th home in Somerset and Hunterdon counties. Over 100 people are now living in homes built by Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity.
